This week’s topic on Alternative Investing is Canadian farmland investing. In recent years, farmland has become a favourite of institutional investors across the globe seeking exposure to a truly alternative asset class – one that has very low correlation to the public markets and serves as an excellent inflation hedge. Farmland in Russia, Africa and South America has been particularly popular, although recent reminders of political risk in emerging markets has shifted investors’ attention to the relative safety of North American markets generally and Western Canada specifically.
